Forest Road, Lydney
The site is located between the town of Lydney, to the south, and the village of Whitecroft, to the north. The carriageway is constructed on an embankment and runs parallel to the River Lyd.
We have been monitoring this site since 2021 and the defects consist of carriageway cracking, subsidence, tilted trees associated with lower slope instability, and blocked gullies.
After reports of ground movement in November 2023, a large slope failure was identified, compromising the stability of the carriageway and safety of the travelling public, resulting in traffic lights being installed which have been in place ever since.
Since this time, detailed ground investigation has been undertaken, and this has been used to produce the design for slope stabilisation which will be achieved by sheet piling.
Update on Road Status and Upcoming Works
Please be advised that the road is currently partially closed due to a landslip and is operating under temporary two-way traffic light control.
Works are planned for early February through to late August 2026 and following the award of the contract we will continue to provide updates.
To allow these major works to be carried out safely and as quickly as possible, a full 24-hour road closure will be required for the duration of the works. During this period there will be no vehicle or pedestrian access through the closed section for the safety of the public and the workforce. A signed diversion route will be in place (please see map for details).
Access Arrangements:
For emergency services, there will be no through road at the scheme extents.
However:
- Access to the railway and southern properties will be available from the south.
- Access to northern properties will be maintained from the north.
- Access to the site itself will be maintained from both ends in emergencies, though the north is the suggested route.
We understand that this prolonged closure of this route will cause inconvenience to local residents, businesses and commuters, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption. Please be assured that everyone involved is working hard to complete the repairs safely and reopen the road as soon as possible.

Yes, site survey work has been carried out to assess potential environmental impacts, and the scheme is being designed to take these into account. The environmental assessment will consider all the potential environmental impacts of the scheme and recommend how these can be alleviated.

As part of the construction tender process, we will set out requirements for methods of working. This will set out the approach to minimise and mitigate the impacts of noise/pollution etc. during the construction period.
