Winchcombe Bridge
Project Overview
Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) is undertaking essential works to restore and strengthen Winchcombe Bridge, which carries the highway over the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) tourist line.
The project will ensure the bridge remains safe, reliable, and fit for modern use while preserving its historical significance.
Why the Work Is Needed
Recent inspections have identified significant deterioration to key structural elements of the bridge, including:
- Deck bearings
- Abutment capping beam
- Deck waterproofing system
In addition, there is evidence of water pressure building up behind the abutments, which can compromise the structure over time.
These issues mean that repairs are needed to maintain safety and bring the bridge in line with current engineering standards and environmental requirements.
What We’re Doing
To address these concerns, GCC will carry out a full deck replacement of the bridge. This approach allows:
- Replacement of all defective elements
- Improved structural performance
- Increased load-carrying capacity to meet modern standards
Timeline
- Winter (this year): Scaffold installation and preparatory works
- Next year: Main construction works and bridge deck replacement
Our Objectives
The project aims to:
- Restore the structural integrity and safety of the bridge for all users
- Ensure compliance with current engineering and environmental standards
- Minimise disruption to the local community and road users during construction
- Preserve the bridge’s historic and visual character while introducing modern safety improvements
Keeping You Informed
We are committed to keeping residents, road users, and stakeholders informed throughout the project. Updates on progress, traffic management, and key milestones will be shared as works progress.
