Interchange Hub Improvements

Merrywalks is the main bus hub in Stroud and has been designated as a ‘strategic market town hub’, defined in Gloucestershire County Council’s emerging Transport Interchange Hub strategy. In recent years, however, the bus shelters at Merrywalks have deteriorated, prompting numerous comments to Stroud District Council about the condition of the shelters and their immediate surroundings.

GCC aims to transform Merrywalks into a more attractive public transport interchange, integrated with other transport modes, featuring improved service information and more comfortable waiting areas.

GCC invited people to give their views on the proposals for Merrywalks during an engagement process, which was held from 5th July to 9th September 2024.

The feedback demonstrated strong support for improvements, with the majority of respondents favouring the installation of high-quality bus shelters, enhanced lighting and RTPI. Improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, including secure cycle storage and better signage, were also highlighted as essential for promoting sustainable travel. For more information on the feedback received during the engagement period, please see the engagement report here: Stroud Merrywalks Transport Hub Engagement

Based on the engagement feedback, GCC are proposing to proceed with the following improvements:

  • 8 new bus shelters
  • Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI) at the bus shelters, within the shopping centre and Stroud railway station
  • Seating
  • Lining works
  • Secure cycle parking
  • Bike repair station
  • Signage
  • Improved footway lighting

The project has been fully funded with joint contributions from GCC, Stroud District Council, and Stroud Town Council. The infrastructure works are scheduled to begin in spring 2025.

Project Update

Significant progress has been made on delivering the planned improvements, including:

  • Bus Shelters – Due to supplier issues, delivery and installation is now expected in January 2026.
  • Secure Cycle Parking – A new location for cycle parking is being considered and work is underway to obtain the necessary permissions.
  • Urban Realm Improvements – Options are being explored to further enhance public spaces.
  • Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI) Boards – Two RTPI boards have been installed at the Five Valleys Shopping Centre. Discussions with GWR and Network Rail are ongoing regarding installation of a board at Stroud railway station.
  • Wayfinding – New wayfinding signage has now been delivered around the area linking Merrywalks to Stroud railway Station.
  • Lighting Improvements – We are now working with National Grid to find a solution to removing an old electrical stump near the bus shelters.
