National Highways A40 Over Bridge works
What is happening?
From 8 June until spring 2027 National Highways will be carrying out essential repair and maintenance work on Over Bridge. The A40 runs across the bridge, over the River Severn, connecting Gloucester, Cheltenham and Ross on Wye.
Drivers are advised to use alternative routes where possible, especially during peak travel times.
National Highways is working hard to make sure activity is as coordinated as possible, and disruption kept to a minimum. However, they recognise this won’t remove all disruption and apologise in advance for the inconvenience the works will cause. Although they are not our works, we will do all we can to support National Highways to keep any impact as limited and short as possible.

What is in place?
To work safely, National Highways need a combination of:
- lane closures
- full closures (overnight for an estimated seven nights during the year, for no more than two consecutive nights at any one time)
- reducing traffic to one lane in each direction with a contraflow and 30mph speed limit in place

Diversions
Drivers travelling westbound will not be able to turn right into Over Farm, Toby Carvery or Horseshoe Drive and will have to divert to the Highnam roundabout to turn around.
Some full overnight closures of the A40 will be required during the works (overnight for an estimated seven nights during the year, for no more than two consecutive nights at any one time). During the full closures a signed diversion will be in place - details available on the National Highways website.
The National Highways work will extend the life of the bridge and reduce the risk of unplanned closures for emergency maintenance work in the future. The scheme will deliver a more resilient, safer and more reliable route for local communities, businesses and freight.
