Roundabout A429 and A419 Cirencester

A partial road closure was in place on the Bristol Road / Swindon Road roundabout in Cirencester.

**UPDATE: 31 May 2024 - Construction works have been completed and the roundabout and roads have now been fully reopened. The crew thank everyone for their patience and support during this time.**

What has happened?

  • During a season of unprecedented rain fall, water ponding was detected and continued to be monitored on the roundabout from the direction of Cirencester towards Swindon and the access to the local housing development of Kingshill Meadow.
  • We continued to monitor the location and it became clear that the water ponding was increasing and becoming a potential safety hazard.

What is in place?

For safety reasons we put in place a partial road closure on the roundabout restricting traffic flow from Cirencester towards Swindon and the local housing development of Kingshill Meadow.

What are we doing?

  • We took this action to ensure site safety and maintain as much highway access as possible.
  • The initial concerns were that it may have been a water supply leak, and working with Thames Water investigations were undertaken to identify the source of the water.
  • Extensive tests were undertaken by Thames Water to try and identify both the source of the water and its composite which included laboratory testing.
  • It was determined by Thames Water that the water source was not related to their water supply.
  • Further extensive investigate works were undertaken, and it has been determined that the likely water source is as a result of unprecedented rain fall which has had a combined effect on the river, spring and underground water levels increasing the surface water level.
  • We are now on site constructing a robust and comprehensive response which will enable the water to be safely collected and diverted away from the carriageway.
  • The Carriageway will then be resurfaced.

How long will this take?

  • This is a challenging situation and we have a timeline to complete the works by mid-June 2024.
  • We will provide continued updates on this page.

Current updates (29 May 2024)

  • We are now close to finalising the construction works and will provide an update on when the current closed section of the roundabout will be reopened.
  • Once the roundabout is fully open, we will be undertaking grass cutting along the highway verges and this will include the roundabout.
  • These works will occur under traffic management and the roundabout will remain open whilst these works are undertaken.
  • As we receive further information we will post updates here.
