Grass cutting

- For safety reasons we cut along some roadsides during the spring.
- Where possible, Gloucestershire County Council supports No Mow May, to help biodiversity thrive.
- Later in the summer we cut along all roads.
Spring safety cut (visibility cut)
To ensure the safety of road users and maintain visibility, we cut some areas at junctions and bends during the spring. The dates of cutting vary each year depending on the weather, and sometimes we carry out some of these small safety cuts during May. Parish and district councils may also choose to cut grass verges during May.
View the 2025 Visibility Cut Program Map (PDF, 13 MB) showing which areas we cut and when. The map also shows which town and parish councils carry out their own grass cutting.

Summer full cut
Later in the season we carry out a full cut: we cut a 1m swathe on all roads, as well as cut backs at junctions and bends for visibility.

We focus on our A and B road network at start of the season and alongside this we carry out cuts on the minor roads. When cutting along side dual carriageways we use traffic management or lane closures, and this is an opportunity to carry out other works which are also needed on those roads at the same time.
We always endeavour to contact all the affected district councils so they can plan in their litter picking or other operations too.
Autumn cut
During the autumn we carry out additional grass cutting.

Hedge cutting
Highway hedge cutting is carried out to maintain visibility and reduce encroachment onto the carriageway. It is done by mechanical flail cutting. Many other hedges are the responsibility of adjoining landowners. We normally carry out hedge cutting from September to February and a schedule will be available here at that time.
