Mature drivers

Here are links to organisations who provide advice for mature drivers on how to drive safely for longer, and how to plan for when it is time to retire from driving. Also, links to support for families and carers concerned about a mature driver.

As a natural part of ageing there is a decline in our cognitive and mobility skills, and health, all that can impact fitness to drive. We may not have had any driver re-training since we passed our test decades ago and may not be aware of the latest rules of the Highway Code, or the latest vehicle safety technologies. The following organisations can help:

Older Drivers Forum Gloucestershire (ODF)

Their website has lots of information regarding mature driver safety. They also offer popular  community webinars covering seasonal road safety topics, customised presentations for special interest groups, and a presence at events. For further information email odfglos@gmail.com

AGE UK Gloucestershire

There are numerous smartphone road safety apps available. If you would like to develop your digital skills to use these apps AGE UK offer a Volunteer Digital Champions service. For further information email enquiries@ageukgloucestershire.org.uk or call 01452422660

IAM RoadSmart

This organisation offers confidence boosting mature driver assessments. They also provide follow-up sessions to address concerns about specific driving situations, and to develop a deeper understanding of advanced driving assistance systems.

Driving Mobility (DM)

Their advice includes vehicle adaptations that can be fitted to most cars.
