The Joys of Winter Walking

Published
Too cold to go out? Just make sure you wrap up and have the right gear for the wintry weather - ideally layers. The rewards are immense and there are great guides for Gloucestershire at the click of a phone!

You don't need to let winter weather put you off walking. In fact, crisp cold days are perfect to enjoy the delights of the Gloucestershire countryside. Thinktravel officer, Liam,  recently enjoyed a beautiful walk around the picturesque Cotswold village of Oakridge, with the treat of a roaring fire and hearty Sunday roast at the end. Surely a perfect reward for the efforts.

Yet the walk is a reward in itself. Our advice is to wrap up warm, be prepared for all weathers including robust wet-weather gear and to wear layers. Think about the terrain, plan the route to match your own fitness level. We used a great online local website RR Gordon with ready to download routes although there are a host of other websites and great books available from good local bookshops!

Perfect for our canine friends too!

Starting in the village, it was not long before they made their descent enjoying the disused but soon to be renovated canal. For now, it is a haven for wildlife and runs alongside a river feeding a spectacular lake to be found nestled alongside some traditional houses hidden away in the woods. This walk, not much more than an hour, required some effort but the views from the path back up to the village are quite spectacular.

Having climbed the hill and enjoyed the glorious colours of late autumn, a roaring fire and a warm welcome awaited our walkers at the local pub. Even Peggy the dog enjoyed a treat thanks to the friendly publicans.
