Understanding Neurodivergence 

Who this course is for  

This course is for anyone interested in learning more about neurodiversity and what it is like to live with neurodivergence. Whether you're a parent, carer, educator, colleague, volunteer, or community member, you'll find practical insights and supportive guidance. You’ll have the chance to learn from an experienced practitioner, lived experience guest speakers and each other. No prior experience or qualifications are needed - just an open mind and a willingness to learn. 

Course Aim 

To develop your understanding of a range of neurodivergent conditions and experiences, helping them build confidence, challenge misconceptions, and create more inclusive environments through greater awareness, empathy, and practical support strategies. 

Course Length 

8 hours total 

Delivered over 4 weekly sessions of 2 hours each. 

Entry requirements  

This course is open to adults aged 19 and over. While it is funded through the DfE Adult Skills Fund (Tailored Learning), we also offer co-funded places to ensure wider access -regardless of income or employment status. 

 No previous qualifications or experience are required. 

You must be ordinarily resident in the UK and live in a non-devolved area of England.

What you’ll learn  

You will cover the following topics and themes: 

  • Gain insight into seven main neurodivergent conditions: Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Tourette's Syndrome, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia and Dysgraphia 

  • Consider common misconceptions, challenges, strengths and unique perspectives associated with different neurodivergent conditions. 

  • Develop practical approaches for communicating with and supporting neurodivergent individuals. 

  • Identify ways to create more inclusive environments at home, in education, in the workplace and in the community. 

How you’ll learn (understand how the course will be delivered) 

This is a remote course, delivered online via Microsoft Teams. You’ll take part in live, interactive sessions led by an experienced tutor, with opportunities for discussion, reflection, and practical learning. A joining link will be sent to you before the course begins. 

To take part, you’ll need access to a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone with a stable internet connection. If you have any accessibility needs or require additional support to participate fully, please let us know in advance so we can make appropriate arrangements.

You’ll need a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone with internet access to join the session. You may also wish to have something to take notes with. Slides will be sent out after each session - these are the only materials you’ll need. 

How you’ll be assessed. (Find out more about exams, assignments and assessments.) 

Assessment is informal and in-session, using Q&A, group discussion, case studies and reflective activities to help reinforce learning. There are no exams or written assignments.
