Disabled Children's Service
The Disabled Children’s Teams support children who have a disability or complex health needs.
We offer support advice and guidance to families who may need our help. We also offer short breaks to children and their families to enable them to live within their families and access the same opportunities as their peers who may not have a disability.
The team also support children where alongside their disability there are child protection concerns or they are children who are cared for by the Local Authority.
We have a focus on working with children creatively and often must think about how best to communicate with them as some children may not be able to tell us how they feel or what is happening. We rely on different ways of communication, use of signs, pictures and body language. Every day is different within our team.
Where we are based
We are based within Shire Hall Gloucester in the middle of the city so you have access to all you need in the town, plus there are some lovely restaurants at the Quays.
Who we are
We have three social work teams and three early intervention teams. We also have support from the commissioning service who help find packages of support for our disabled children. We have the benefit of a permanent service manager and head of service.
We also have our own short break overnight provision for disabled children called Hartwood House.
Skills you'll need
- We want people to join who are hard working
- Willing to be part of a supportive team
- Have an absolute focus on children and advocating in their best interests
- Able to work collaboratively with parents and carers
Why you should join us
Here's what a colleague said about one of our social workers:
“I would just like to say what a pleasure it is to work with you. The clarity you provide to the family and professionals about the risks and how they are going to be addressed in a warm relational style, without losing the potency is good, along with your knowledge and expertise in working with children with disabilities. I can see already the family and professionals have trust in you to support the family to make the necessary changes, to keep the children safe.
And one of our new starters:
“The team are so supportive, reflective and encouraging of each other. I have never been made to feel so welcome in a new role.”
One of our social workers has been nominated for Social Worker of the Year!
