A Gloucestershire County Council worker has been nominated for an award for the support he has given to young people leaving care.

Dave Short has been a personal adviser since 2007, dedicating over 15 years to supporting care leavers.

He has been nominated for an award at the National Personal Adviser awards.

The awards are part of the National Leaving Care Benchmarking Forum’s Annual National ‘Personal Adviser Event’ which will be held in Birmingham on Thursday 9 November.

The National Leaving Care Benchmarking Forum (NLCBF) is made up of over 125 local authority leaving care teams, working together to share good practice and improve services and support for care experienced young people.

The ‘Personal Adviser’ event aims to recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution made by Personal Advisers in supporting young people who are due to leave or have left local authority care.

Personal Advisers play a pivotal role in supporting care leavers as they learn to live independently. They offer advice, support information and practical help to make sure young people are ready to leave care and live independently.

Dave was nominated by Sonia Cheetham, Team Manager at Gloucestershire County Council, for his long service supporting Gloucestershire’s care leavers.

Dave said: “Care leavers have so many things that they need to work out for themselves in life, it’s a pleasure to be involved in assisting them in any small way and I’m touched these efforts have been noted.”

The winner of the ‘Personal Adviser’ award will be announced at the NLCBF event on Thursday.

Cllr Stephen Davies, cabinet member for Children’s Safeguarding and Early Years at Gloucestershire County Council said: “It is wonderful that Dave’s dedication and outstanding contribution to supporting children and young people who have left or are due to leave care in Gloucestershire is being recognised at a national level.

“Dave's nomination demonstrates his dedication, commitment, and passion for helping Gloucestershire’s care leavers achieve their potential in adulthood. I wish Dave the very best of luck and thank him for his long service to Gloucestershire.”
