This programme will provide newly appointed International Social Workers and their team managers with the necessary support, which has been informed by the BASW guidance and feedback gathered from International Social Workers already working within the workforce. Having a bespoke programme promotes cultural sensitivity across the service, develop practice fitting with UK standards and provide individuals with the required additional learning and development opportunities that will increase their confidence and knowledge.

The current programme has been running since July 2024 and consists of a range of specific opportunities tailored to support a smooth transition into the UK and Local Authority. The induction period covers 4/6 weeks without families allocated, shadowing colleagues, learning sessions and reflective practice groups at the Academy.

The induction programme includes;
  • a HR corporate induction session,
  • an awareness of local services, and safeguarding partners, Gloucestershire's thresholds and referral process,
  • information on assessments and initial contact with families,
  • how to develop a child centred plan and the child protection process,
  • information on the use of direct work tools, safety planning and the importance of chronologies,
  • access to Gloucestershire's Essential programme and introduction to systemic practice and
  • an introduction to the Race Equality Network and Wellbeing team
