School Governance – Local authority governors
School governors have a vital role to play in supporting and challenging school leaders, helping ensure that young people are given every opportunity to reach their potential.
In all maintained schools, and some academies, there is a governor nominated by the Local Authority. In Gloucestershire, the county councillor, for the division in which the school sits, is asked to nominate this governor when a vacancy arises. The governing board of the school will decide whether to appoint the person nominated, basing their decision on the experience and capabilities of the nominee, and the skills required on the governing board at that time.
You may know someone you could nominate, or sometimes the school, or the Governor Services team may have a name to put forward to you for consideration.
Governor Services will be contacting you shortly with information on the nomination process as well as details of any current vacancies in your division.
