Scrutiny and Chairing Training Sessions

South West Councils have been invited to run two training sessions for our members to develop their scrutiny and chairing skills. 

The Overview and Scrutiny session will be held via teams on Tuesday 24th October 2023 from 10-12pm.

This session will likely cover: 

  • Understanding the concept and role of Scrutiny

  • Key relationships that support effective Scrutiny

  • Principles of effective Scrutiny

  • Powers, statutory awareness (including links to EDI), constitutional fit

  • Understanding the risk

  • Financial implications

  • Making recommendations

  • Scrutiny skills

The Chairing Training session will be held via teams on Wednesday 1st November from 5-7pm.

This session will include information on getting the most out of your role as meeting chair and managing the constantly changing aspects of the committees including knowing when to use your authority to push the meeting on.
