White Ribbon Day – Saturday 25 November
White Ribbon Day – Saturday 25 November As a White Ribbon UK accredited organisation, GCC will be flying the White Ribbon flag from Shire Hall to highlight our support to ending violence against women and girls.
Most violence against women is committed by men. It is therefore the behaviours and attitudes of men that must change, not, as it is often portrayed, something for women to address.
White Ribbon UK’s work is preventative – wanting to end violence before it starts. It is therefore important to work with men and boys, to make sure we change the story for the future.
Violence takes on many forms. It is not just the horrific acts that get covered by the media, some behaviours and words may seem ‘harmless’ but normalising them ignores the short and long-term effects on women and can lead to more extreme violence.
It is so important that we talk about it, educate ourselves and others and don’t accept behaviours we know are wrong – by doing this, we can all play our part in making sure that women and girls can live their lives free from the fear of violence.
On 30 November a GCC White Ribbon conference is being held, where those who have signed up to be White Ribbon champions or ambassadors will come together to discuss and agree how together they can make the biggest difference. If you would like to sign up to become a white ribbon champion or ambassador, please go to the White Ribbon UK website (Here) for more information.
