Local Government Reorganisation: The timelines

- December 2024: English Devolution Whitepaper published
- February 2025: Gloucestershire receives invitation to submit interim proposal for Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in March
- February 2025: Cross-council workstreams set up
- March 2025: Letter sent to government outlining three options for LGR in Gloucestershire
- May 2025: High-level feedback letter received from Ministry of Housing, Communities, & Local Government
- May - October 2025: Proposals in development ahead of submission in November
- July - August 2025: Programme of public engagement undertaken jointly by councils
- Late October 2025: Proposals published in full
- November 2025: All councils consider and debate proposals, with each council deciding a preference
- 28 November 2025: Proposals submitted to government
- Early 2026: Government to announce viable options it will carry forward. Public consultation launched
- Mid 2026: 'Decision Day' - government to announce final decision on proposals ahead of Summer recess
- May 2027: Possible elections to new shadow unitary authority/authorities
- 1 April 2028: Likely vesting date of new councils and dissolving of predecessor councils
