Challenges

Most refugees settle into Gloucestershire well, becoming part of their communities and living a productive life. Asylum seekers are offered a welcome and safe place to live whilst they wait for a decision about their future. Occasionally however, integration or acceptance may be more difficult.

Nationally we have seen protests being held outside asylum and refugee accommodation. This is fuelled by an agenda of division in some parts of the media, which in turn has been seen to lead to an escalation in violence and hate crime targeting asylum seekers, refugees or those perceived to belong to the migrant cohort. This is also playing out against a backdrop of gradually reducing public sympathy year on year since 2019 towards those migrants crossing the channel, who predominantly arrive claiming asylum.

Fortunately we have not witnessed this level of violence in Gloucestershire.

But individual examples of harassment and racism towards refugees and people seeking asylum do exist. Gloucestershire Constabulary and the Police and Crime Commissioner have made it easier to report hate crimes including those due to migrant status. Victims are encouraged to talk to community groups who work in partnership with the police as well as Victim Support. Individuals are given emotional and practical help with reporting crimes and accessing legal advice.

Schools in Gloucestershire play a significant role in promoting tolerance and understanding among young people. Anti-bullying initiatives and diversity education are part of the curriculum to prevent hate-related behaviour from an early age.

Gloucester is working towards becoming a City of Sanctuary to reflect the city’s inclusivity and the welcome given to refugees and asylum seekers. This achievement will build on the work Cheltenham have done to gain their Town of Sanctuary status.

Through these combined efforts, Gloucestershire is creating a safe and inclusive environment for all residents, including migrants, and effectively reducing the amount of hate crimes.
