Getting Ready For School

Starting school is an exciting time for children and their parents.    Please see below for information and guidance to help you support them through their pre-school year ready to start the next stage of their education journey.

Starting Reception is a great resource that you can share with parents of pre-school children.  It highlights the key skills that parents can practise with their children to make their journey to Reception as positive as possible.

Ready for Learning Toolkit (RFL)

The RFL is a simple tool to assess how children are progressing in their pre-school year.   We strongly recommend that all children are included in the RFL as this can provide a useful and informative transition document.

Transitions

Providers, schools and parents should work together to ensure all children experience a planned and successful transition into reception.

Transition documents should be completed for each child and passed to the receiving school at the beginning of June.

Please refer to Gloucestershire's Guide to Good Transitions it gives simple advice and guidance for providers, schools and parents of children through their pre-school year and into their first term in reception.

Please find attached the Ready for Reception Transition Record and an example for reference.

Please complete this document for all children who will be moving into school this year.   This easy‑to‑use tool has been developed to reflect both RFL and EYFS assessment information and will replace the existing transition record. It is designed to support Early Years providers in sharing clear, consistent information with schools, ensuring each child’s strengths and needs are effectively communicated as they transition into Reception.
