Libraries that welcome every mind
Libraries supporting neurodivergent young adults
Gloucestershire Libraries work hard to make sure every young adult, neurodivergent or not, feels welcome, supported and able to enjoy their library in their own way. Across the county, libraries offer calm spaces, creative activities, and book collections designed to meet different needs and interests. Membership is FREE, and gives access to our network of 40 county and community libraries across the county.
Spaces designed with comfort in mind
Libraries can be busy places, so Gloucestershire Libraries make sure there are quieter options for those who prefer a calmer visit. Every library offers a weekly quieter time with reduced background noise and a more relaxed atmosphere, helping neurodivergent young people feel comfortable and at ease. Outside these sessions, staff remain friendly and understanding, and noise is never treated as a problem, everyone is encouraged to be themselves.
Books that support and inspire
Young adult readers will find shelves filled with engaging, accessible titles. Graphic novels offer visual storytelling for teens who enjoy dynamic, image‑led reads, while the curated Young Adult wellbeing collection explores mental health, identity, and neurodiversity in a supportive way. Many books are available in dyslexia‑friendly formats, and library membership includes free access to eBooks and eAudio through BorrowBox. Whether someone wants comfort reading, new interests, or information to better understand themselves, there’s plenty to explore
Helpful signposting when you need extra support
Sometimes young adults and their families need more than just books. Gloucestershire Libraries help by signposting people to trusted organisations and community groups across the county that offer further support for neurodiverse young people. Staff can point visitors to inclusive activity directories, local neurodiversity networks, and other services designed to help young people connect, learn, and feel supported.
Mix & Mash and other inclusive activities
One of the exciting, creative programmes running in several libraries is Mix & Mash, delivered with The Music Works. These drop‑in music‑making sessions are designed with young people with additional needs in mind but are open to all aged 7–25. They offer a relaxed, friendly space where young people can try out DJing, make beats, and explore music using specialist equipment, no experience needed. The sessions are inclusive, supported by trained staff, and designed so everyone can join in at a level that feels comfortable.
A community that welcomes everyone
Whether a young adult wants to lose themselves in a graphic novel, find a safe place to unwind, try something creative, or learn more about wellbeing and neurodiversity, Gloucestershire Libraries aim to offer something that feels right for them. The focus is always on creating spaces where young people feel valued, understood, and able to enjoy the library in the way that suits them best. We look forward to welcoming you soon!
