An Introduction – Naomi Adams, new Head of Service for Disabled Children, Gloucestershire County Council
Hi Everyone,
I thought now seemed like a good time to introduce myself as the new Head of Service for Disabled Children. We are sadly losing Sue Hall at the end of the year and I will take over as her replacement.
I started out my career with young people and adults who had a learning disability. I spent a lot of time getting to know them, supporting them and their families ensuring their ‘voices’ were heard and advocating on their behalf. So I am aware of some of the barriers and challenges faced each day caring for a disabled child. At times I am sure that it feels like you are often pulled in many directions and it’s hard to navigate.
I feel that this role is taking me back to my roots and I am really excited to move back into this area of the service. For a period of time, Sue will be spending time introducing me to everyone and we will be working alongside each other. This will enable me to settle back in ready to take the reins from her in the new year.
I have been practising as a social worker for over 16 years and more recently managed the Safeguarding and Assessment Service as the Head of Service.
Some of you may be wondering about my experience given that I am moving from my current role as Head of Service for the frontline Assessment and Safeguarding Service to my new position as Head of Service for Disabled Children.
However, in the Assessment and Safeguarding Service all children we work with are considered a Child in Need and building relationships with families and working with the professionals around the child are all commonalities whichever part of the service you are in.
Whilst I have extensive experience working with children and their families, I know that if anyone wanted to understand about my own children, I would be the ‘expert’ on them and that’s the same for you as parents. You are the ‘experts’ on what your children need. I know that when working together we may not always agree and there may be some difficult conversations, however, you can expect me to be visible, transparent and respectful.
My passion is providing children and their families with the right support and ensuring they are the priority in all we do. I think people would say that I am approachable, supportive and understanding and I think this is particularly important when you as a family need support.
I am look forward to meeting you all and please say ‘Hello’ if you see me out and about.
