Dynamic Keyworkers – what do they do?

Published
Following an article in Octobers Families in Partnership on the Dynamic Support Register, the Dynamic Keyworking Team want to share more about Dynamic Keyworkers and how they can support children or young people on the Dynamic Support Register.

A Dynamic Keyworker is someone who can take a key role in supporting children and young people, aged up to 25yrs who have a diagnosis of a learning disability and/or autism.

They work with children and young people who are on the Dynamic Support Register and who may be at risk of being admitted to or are already an inpatient in a specialist mental health unit.

In some circumstance, a Dynamic Keyworker may work with children and young people where there is a significantly increased risk of the person becoming mentally unwell and a risk of placement or family breakdown or those children and young people who are starting to display challenging behaviours which existing services are struggling to manage within the community.

Dynamic Keyworkers come from a range of professions: they all have experience working with children and young people who are having a difficult time or are experiencing a mental health problem.

They recognise that no one knows more about your child’s care needs than you and your family.

A Dynamic Keyworker is someone who will work in partnership with you and your family to get to know what you are great at and to understand what you or your family might need support with.

They might do this by:

  • Having regular contact with you and your family to provide support, information and helping you understand your options so you can feel confident when making decisions.
  • Helping you and your family talk to professionals, attending meetings with you or on your behalf, or helping you access services that might be able to help you.
  • Giving you information, in a way that works for you, which will help you understand your condition and what treatments are available to you.
  • Helping you understand how the health, care, education, and voluntary organisations work for you and referring you to additional services if you might need them, or helping you move onto adult services.
  •  Being the main contact for you and your family, helping to coordinate your care and making sure that you and your family are as involved as you want to be in all the decisions about you.
  • Attending meetings about you and work alongside other professionals involved in your care.
  •  ‘Stepping aside’ when risks are managed, ready to step back in when invited too, in response to increased risks or challenges.

The Dynamic Keyworkers work with health, education, social care and voluntary organisations across Gloucestershire.

Dynamic Keyworkers will not replace any existing workers/professionals. They are there to support you and your family and will take time to learn what is important to you and what works best for you.

Dynamic Keyworkers will keep you and your family at the centre of decision making so decisions will be made with you, not for you.

Dynamic Keyworkers can offer additional support to children and young people who:

  • Have been diagnosed with a learning disability and / or autism.
  • Have registered on the Dynamic Support Register.
  •  Are under 25 years old
  • May be at risk of being admitted to, or are already an inpatient in, a specialist mental health unit
