Introducing Sophia Khan, the new Student Independence Officer at GCC

Published
Sophia Khan joined the GCC Preparing for Adulthood team in September as our new Student Independence Officer, working across our statutory and commissioned services. She has a wealth of experience in supporting people directly in the community using a person-centred approach. She talks to Families in Partnership about taking on this new challenge.

“I recently started my new role with Gloucestershire County Council, supporting children with special educational needs to becoming more independent. This role allows me to work directly with students facing learning challenges, ensuring they have the support and resources necessary to reach their full potential. It’s a position that demands empathy, patience, and strong communication skills.

“I work in a local school, collaborating closely with teachers and support staff to develop personalized strategies for children. The goal is to ensure each student feels included and confident in their progression towards adulthood. Additionally, I provide one-to-one support through a specialist service, focusing on the unique needs of each student and delivering tailored solutions to help them overcome obstacles.

“This role is both challenging and rewarding, offering a meaningful opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of young people.”
