Mother Language Day is an international day that promotes linguistic and cultural diversity and the importance of preserving mother languages.

There are 8,324 languages in the world today, according to the United Nations (UN), who initially proclaimed International Mother Language Day back in 2000.

Many languages are supported in Gloucestershire and multilingual education not only promotes inclusive societies but also aids in preserving non-dominant, minority, and indigenous languages.

It is a cornerstone for achieving equitable access to education and lifelong learning opportunities for all individual

Mother languages:

  • keep cultures alive;
  • support identity and education;
  • help children express themselves; and
  • make us proud of our heritage.

Everyone can celebrate by exploring languages in their community:

  • learn about languages and:
  • their cultural significance;
  • use your mother language:
  • read, write, speak, and share it with others, and:
  • share traditions through stories, songs, or cultural activities.
