Gloucestershire Libraries: Welcoming spaces for neurodiverse families
Gloucestershire Libraries are inclusive spaces for neurodiverse families, offering weekly quiet times for a calm environment while welcoming noise at other times. With accessible resources, supportive staff, and sensory-friendly options, libraries provide safe, flexible places for learning, relaxation, and community. Check www.gloslibraries.uk for quiet session schedules.
Libraries have always been places of discovery, imagination, and community, and in Gloucestershire, we’re proud to make sure they are inclusive for everyone, including neurodiverse children and adults. Whether you’re looking for a calm space to read, a vibrant environment to explore, or tailored support for your family, our libraries are here for you.
Quiet times for a calmer experience
We understand that some visitors prefer a quieter environment. That’s why every Gloucestershire library offers a dedicated quiet time each week, designed to create a calm and soothing atmosphere for those who need it. These sessions vary by location, so families can choose the time that works best for them. During quiet time, we reduce background noise and encourage a peaceful setting, perfect for reading, relaxing, or simply enjoying the space without sensory overload.
Noise is not a problem
Outside of these dedicated sessions, our libraries remain welcoming and flexible. We know that life (and learning) can be lively! Noise is never a problem in our spaces, and we encourage families to feel comfortable being themselves. Whether your child expresses excitement vocally or needs to move around, our staff are understanding and supportive. Libraries are community spaces, and we celebrate diversity in all its forms.
Inclusive resources and support
Gloucestershire Libraries offer a wide range of resources to support neurodiverse individuals and their families. From sensory-friendly story times to accessible formats like audiobooks, eBooks, and graphic formats, we aim to make reading and learning enjoyable for everyone. We also have a wide range of titles on parenting when you’re neurodivergent and raising neurodivergent children. Our staff are trained to provide assistance and can help you find materials or spaces that suit your needs.
Why libraries matter
Libraries are more than shelves of books, they’re safe, inclusive environments where everyone can belong. For neurodiverse families, they offer opportunities to explore interests, build confidence, and connect with others in a supportive setting. Whether you’re visiting for a quiet moment, a fun activity, or simply to borrow a book, you’ll find a warm welcome waiting for you.
Find your quiet time: Contact your local Gloucestershire library via Gloucestershire's Local Offer, Support for Families with SEND or visit our website at www.gloslibraries.uk to check the schedule for quiet sessions. We look forward to seeing you soon!
