From tales about making friends to stories that ease first-day nerves, these books are perfect for reading together and sparking conversations about what to expect. Search the catalogue or ask in your local library for support.

Library Challenge 2025

But that’s not all—Gloucestershire Libraries are also launching the Library Challenge 2025, a free and inclusive summer reading initiative designed to encourage all children aged 3 and up to develop a love of reading. Running from 12 July to 13 September, this year’s theme is “Discover The Natural World”, blending the magic of books with the wonders of nature.

Here’s how it works:

Sign up for free at any Gloucestershire library and receive a challenge journal with nine nature-themed tasks.

Complete tasks by reading, exploring, and engaging in fun activities—either solo or with family and friends.

Collect stamps and rewards for each completed task. Reach Bronze, Silver, or Gold levels and earn stickers, certificates, and even a special medal.

Go for Gold to enter a prize draw with exciting rewards like tickets and vouchers for local attractions.

The Library Challenge is designed to be inclusive and accessible, welcoming children of all abilities, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). It’s a fantastic way to keep children engaged over the summer, build reading confidence, and create lasting memories.

Whether your child is preparing for Reception or simply loves stories, Gloucestershire Libraries offer a warm, welcoming space to explore books, take part in creative challenges, and discover the joy of reading.

Visit your local library or go to gloslibraries.uk to join the challenge, borrow starting school books, and start your summer reading adventure today!
