A new special school to open in September 2023

Gloucestershire County Council is currently seeking the necessary approvals to progress its proposal to establish a new primary special school to open in September 2023, using the school building and grounds previously occupied by Severn View Primary Academy in Stroud.

The new school will add further to the number of additional special school places that will be created when the 80 place Brook Academy, for children and young people aged 11 – 16 years, opens its doors in September 2022.

A four-week period of stakeholder engagement concluded in April 2022 and there was a very high level of support amongst those parent carers and head teachers who responded to the survey (as well as the community living near to the proposed site) in favour of creating further special school places within the county and for utilising the former Severn View Primary Academy. Thank you to all those that took part and attended the drop in events.

The school will provide an additional 60 school places for primary aged children with Moderate and Additional Learning Difficulties. It is anticipated that the locally led process to identify a suitable academy trust to run the school will conclude towards the end of September 2022, when the Regional Schools Commissioner will confirm the selected trust. Officers have liaised closely with representatives of Gloucestershire Parent Carer Forum and will continue to do so as the project progresses.

Further information about the proposals to establish the new school, including more detail about the range of needs it will cater for, is available on the new 60 place special school page.

Enquiries about potential placements at the school should be made to the EHCP Casework Team via your named casework officer or by emailing sengenenq@gloucestershire.gov.uk.
