The Supported Internship is a great way of supporting young people with a disability or barrier, take their first steps towards paid employment. The course offers an opportunity for interns to gain practical working experience whilst supported by a qualified work coach who can help develop key skills required to succeed in the workplace and improve the prospects of young people. Integrated into the work week will be a day in college which will give interns a chance to develop their maths and English or workplace training and employability skills. Supported Internships will typically run in a student’s last year of education whilst bridging the gap into the world of employment.

The working week will consist of three days with an employer, receiving on the job training, One day in college and a non-workday. Over the year Interns will build confidence, learn transferable work-based skills, before taking your first steps towards a paid outcome. To be eligible you must have a disability, EHCP or barrier to employment. Interns must be aged 16 to 24 and most importantly have a keen desire to gain experience in a real working environment, become part of team and get a paid job at the end of your internship.

Over the years, supported internships in Gloucestershire have increased in popularity with each of our 3 providers, Gloucestershire College, SGS College and National Star College (Greensteps). Since Internships started in Gloucestershire, the number of students gaining paid employment has significantly increased to over 50% with the number likely to grow within the next cohort of Interns. On the supported internship we have worked with over 120 employers which student will have access to which allows for a more variety of suitable placements leading to sustainable employment. This programme is a fantastic opportunity for young people with barriers to progress out of education and on the road to more independent lives.
