Protecting children and young people with SEND: Free flu vaccines this autumn/winter
As the colder months approach, flu and other seasonal illnesses can pose a greater risk - especially for children and young people with special education needs and disabilities (SEND).
Who is eligible for a free flu vaccine?
In Gloucestershire, the following children and young people are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine:
- Children aged 2 or 3 years (as of 31 August 2025)
- All school-aged children from Reception to Year 1- children and young people aged 6 months to under 18 years who are in clinical risk groups
- Pupils in special schools (up to age 25)
- Home-educated children, who will be invited to community clinics

How is the vaccine given?
Most children will receive the nasal spray vaccine, which is quick, painless, and effective. If the nasal spray isnโt suitable โ due to allergies, medical conditions, or dietary restrictions โ a flu injection is available as an alternative.
Where will vaccinations take place?
- In schools: The School Age Immunisation Service will visit schools across Gloucestershire.
- Community clinics and pharmacies: For children who are home educated or miss their school session.
What do parents/carers need to do?
- Look out for consent forms from your childโs school or local authority.
- Complete and return them promptly.
