£1.7million for care workers as New Year bonus

Gloucestershire County Council will pay out more than £1.7million to care workers as a New Year bonus to recognise their commitment throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

The council is distributing £1,713,010 to care providers in Gloucestershire, with each member of staff, who has been employed for a minimum of six months, receiving a one off bonus in the coming weeks.

The funding, from the Government’s Workforce Recruitment and Retention Fund, is designed to address pressures in the adult social care workforce and is being offered to bed-based and community care providers working in Gloucestershire to support staff retention.

Cllr Carole Allaway-Martin, cabinet member for adult social care commissioning, said, “Care workers continue to work tirelessly to support some of the most vulnerable people in the county. I hope this financial boost will help kick start 2022 in a positive way for these, so often, unsung heroes and encourage them to remain in the sector. It is only right we recognise and reward them for continually going above and beyond under extreme pressure.

“It’s no secret that we need to attract more people to the care sector; it’s a demanding yet extremely rewarding job and I would urge anyone considering it as a career to give it a go.”
