Gloucestershire Libraries launch first choir to help combat loneliness
The choir, which was launched at Longlevens Library on 1 November, is part of a three-year Arts Council England-funded initiative focusing on Ageing with Creativity.
The choir is an inclusive community group and welcomes those living with dementia and memory loss and their carers. Although the singing is important, it is a great opportunity to make new friends.
There is no requirement for previous singing experience or an audition and everyone is welcome to try it out.
Song choices and ideas are welcomed as the members shape how the group develops.
The choir is led by Fiona Taylor and meets at Longlevens Library every Wednesday, from 11am to 12.30pm. Refreshments are provided and there is no need to book, anyone is welcome to come along.
You can also call the library on 01452 525952 for more information or email lolib@gloucestershire.gov.uk.
The project follows Gloucestershire Libraries being recognised as a National Portfolio Organisation by Arts Council England, with funding awarded for three years for new activities and resources.
Gloucestershire Libraries and Gloucestershire NHS Trust will be offering advice and support for older people, as well as providing accessible and engaging activities, including library choirs.
Cllr Dave Norman, cabinet member for libraries, said: “I’m pleased to see Gloucestershire Libraries have launched their first choir as part of the Ageing with Creativity project. It will help to tackle loneliness and isolation and is also a great opportunity to meet new friends.
“I would encourage anyone interested to go along and try it out – you don’t need any previous singing experience and everyone is welcome.”
