Tree to be removed in Cheltenham

A Cedar tree on Hatherley Road in Cheltenham is due to be removed by Gloucestershire County Council.

The tree is on the public highway and following a long running negotiation with a homeowner, following structural damage, the tree is now to be removed after every other option has been exhausted.

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire County Council said: “We’re truly devastated to have to remove this beautiful Cedar tree. Unfortunately, the tree is causing structural damage to a nearby property which cannot be prevented in any other way. We have exhausted all other options and we’re incredibly sad that this is the final outcome. We will be planting a suitable replacement tree in the area.”

Cllr Roger Whyborn, county councillor for Benhall and Up Hatherley, said: "Clearly nobody wants to see the removal of a fine tree such as this, but the reality is that it is causing damage to the neighbouring property, and there is risk of further damage. Short-term fixes will sadly only bring the problem back again. I have been pleased to work with the neighbours affected, and I will be talking to council officers about suitable replacement tree planting."
