Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service team win gold…AGAIN

Over the weekend (27- 28 July) the defending Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) championship team took part in The British Firefighter Challenge in Liverpool and won again! 

The British Firefighter Challenge, an annual sporting event, is a competition organised by Firefighters, for Firefighters.

The GFRS team was made up of 23 members of staff who train together and regularly attend competitions across the country.

For the third year running the team won ‘Best Fundraisers’, they raised over £3,700 for The Fire Fighters Charity, a charity who support past and present fire and rescue service staff. 

The firefighters from GFRS achieved the following results:

  • Fastest Overall Fire Service – second year running (Sam Cushing, Matt Adams and Kai Weaver's combined times)
  • 1st Place Overall - Matt Adams
  • 1st Place in his age category - Matt Adams
  • 2nd Place in his age category - Sam Cushing
  • 3rd place in his age category - Kai Weaver
  • 2nd Place British Male Relay (Sam Cushing, Matt Adams, Kai Weaver and Bobby Petrov)
  • 1st Place Female Relay (Amy Lynex, Ceri Large, Teresa Waplington and Cailin Jo-Tyler from Leicestershire)
  • 3rd Place in her age category - Teresa Waplington
  • 3rd Place Female Relay (Emma Clitherow and firefighters from other fire services)

·The team had a huge amount of support over the weekend from friends and family, as well as Deputy Chief Fire Officer Nathaniel Hooton and Cllr Dave Norman attending the event to support the team. 

Cllr Dave Norman, who joined the team for the weekend in Liverpool, said: “It was a fantastic event to experience, and it exhibited the best of the Fire and Rescue Service and our firefighters from across the UK and Europe. Team GFRS were superb with a representative team of 23, much larger in numbers than many UK Services. They retained the national title and came back with some fantastic results. 

“Over the weekend I witnessed team bonding and camaraderie, alongside supporters, who were cheering every performance, demonstrating the best spirit of competition and a determination to bring it home. It was a privilege for me to witness the commitment and the will to win.”     

Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Nathaniel Hooton, said: “It was a great weekend, with amazing people for a great cause.  I couldn’t be prouder of the dedication, professionalism, determination and commitment that our GFRS team demonstrated over the weekend. The team, supporters, family and friends exemplified the spirit of the service. Congratulations.”
