Creating better journeys in Gloucestershire

Published
A host of innovative methods and machinery are being used by Gloucestershire County Council to create better journeys for Gloucestershire.

We’re continuing to deliver on our 4-year commitment to invest £100m into the County’s roads. And alongside our usual spend on pothole repairs we’re investing an extra £500k this year to increase the number of potholes we can tackle and to trial innovative solutions that can help us boost efficiency and continue to deliver benefits in the future.

Investment and innovation

  1. Find and fix crews – teams focussing on finding smaller potholes and fixing them before they become a problem.

  2. Spray injection patcher – the machine capable of fixing up to 100 potholes a day has been out tackling the worst that this wet winter has had to offer.

  3. Cold material trials – an inventive material that is put down cold – this leads to less waste and can be laid in varying conditions.

  4. JCB Pothole Pro - this 13-tonne machine cuts away damaged sections of the road surface, creating a clean slate for repair teams. By removing the damaged material efficiently, the machine streamlines the repair process.

  5. Roadmender – a new piece of kit coming into the county at the end of May. It uses a layer of recycled material to cover and seal sections of the road and make repairs last longer.

  6. Bobcat planer – a powerful saw to cut through layers of the road surface and remove damaged patches .

Together all these new innovations are being not just trialled but also reviewed so that Gloucestershire County Council can focus on the most efficient and cost-effective methods.

Reporting:

In addition to this the county council has launched a new process for reporting of issues. Fix My Street is a well-known online tool which successfully supports many councils with the reporting, tracking and resolving of issues. Anyone can use this simple tool and all kinds of issues can be reported. Report a pothole with Fix My Street.

Cllr Dom Morris, Cabinet Member for Highways and Flooding said, “We’re determined to tackle potholes and create better journeys for everyone in Gloucestershire. To do this we’re using cutting-edge machinery and the latest techniques for longer-lasting repairs. We inspect the roads on a regular basis but if you spot a problem please report it online with Fix My Street. Our Highways teams are working extremely hard to create better journeys for everyone.”
