A435 closure to be extended by two weeks for essential railway bridge strengthening works
The extension, which runs until 22 September, is due to additional work being identified for utility diversions and structural works on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) Bridge.
The works to the bridge are taking place as part of the A435 Cheltenham to Bishop's Cleeve Cycleway and are necessary to repair and strengthen the bridge. These improvements are crucial to ensure its long-term safety and reliability for all users. They will also enable walking and cycling improvements along the route as part of the cycle scheme.
In response to these additional bridge works, the council have been working closely with their contractor to minimise delays, and the contractor has increased their workforce and undertaken weekend working where possible. Despite these efforts, the additional work needed on the bridge means that the two-week extension is required.
The council remains confident that this extension will not affect the overall timeline for the re-opening of the road. It is still expected to re-open in both directions on 31 October 2025 as planned. Works to complete the new cycleway and footway will then continue along the route until early 2026, utilising local traffic management as required.
This road closure is required to provide the safe working space to carry out the repair work on the bridge, prevent further issues with the structure and to protect the safety of workers and the public.
More information about the A435 Cheltenham to Bishop's Cleeve Cycleway can be found at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/highways/a435cycleway, which also contains further details of the bridge works and the reason for the road closure.
The revised closure dates will now be as follows:
- Full road closure in both directions: 2 June to 22 September 2025
- Northbound closure only (with southbound open): 22 September to 31 October 2025
During the full road closure and northbound closure periods, clearly signed diversion routes will be in place to guide road users safely around the works. Road users are advised to plan their journeys in advance and follow the diversion signs carefully.
Cllr Roger Whyborn, Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways and Sustainable Transport, said: “It’s unfortunate that these essential works will need to be extended by two weeks. Due to the complexity of the work, extra time is needed and we’re doing all we can to open the road as quickly as possible. I want to extend my thanks to residents and those who use the road for their patience, as well as local bus service provider Stagecoach.”
