Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) is proud to announce that it has received the highest honour from the Asian Fire Service Association (AFSA) for its work on equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I).

This prestigious national award recognises the Service’s commitment to embedding ED&I throughout every layer of the organisation.

Representatives from GFRS at the conference accepted the ‘Shining Light National Advisor’ 2025 award on behalf of the Service. This award is presented annually to a fire and rescue service that demonstrates outstanding contributions to equality, diversity and inclusion, particularly through fostering an inclusive workplace culture.

The award celebrates the collective efforts of GFRS teams in creating an inclusive workplace, amplifying underrepresented voices and driving meaningful change across the fire and rescue sector.

The presentation took place at the AFSA Conference Awards Evening on 26 November 2025 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Centre, London Heathrow. The event brought together fire service professionals from across the country to celebrate achievements in diversity, inclusion and community impact.

Mark Preece, Chief Fire Officer, said: “This award is a proud moment for everyone at Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service. It reflects the hard work and dedication of our teams to create a Service where everyone feels valued and respected. Equality, diversity and inclusion are principles we live by every day to better serve our communities and I would like to thank the Asian Fire Service Association for this honour.”

Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, cabinet member for the fire and rescue service at Gloucestershire County council, added: “I am delighted that GFRS has been recognised nationally for its leadership in equality, diversity and inclusion. This achievement shows our commitment to fairness and respect, both within the Service and in the way we engage with the public. It’s a fantastic example of how we are building a stronger, more inclusive future for our Service and the communities we serve.”
