Colleagues with their certificates

The GELS Long Service Awards were held on Friday 7 November to celebrate 17 colleagues who have each dedicated between 25 and 41 years to GELS, representing a combined total of 564 years of service. These fantastic colleagues have been instrumental in shaping the service through decades of change, consistently demonstrating commitment, care, and excellence.

GELS loans community equipment to people with care and support needs to help them live independently and safely at home, or to regain their independence after a hospital stay. It is an inclusive employer, offering personalised support to help people with disabilities to overcome barriers and achieve long-term employment. Many of the colleagues honoured at the event have themselves been supported in this way.

The celebration event was hosted by Sarah Scott, Executive Director of Adult Social Care who thanked each colleague personally and presented them with a certificate.

Andrew Watts, Refurbishment Lead, reflected on his long service and dedication saying: “I have been employed by GELS since 2 January 1995, and throughout the past 30 years I have always been and continue to be extremely proud to be part of the service we provide to the community of Gloucestershire. I genuinely enjoy working alongside colleagues at all levels, who share the same passion and commitment to delivering the highest standard of service to everyone we support.”

GELS Operations Manager, Josie Sparaco said: “It is with immense pride and gratitude that we celebrate this incredible milestone from our colleagues. Their unwavering commitment, deep expertise, and loyalty have not only shaped our culture but have also been instrumental in our continued success.

"In a time when recruitment and retention are more critical than ever, their long-standing service is a powerful testament to the value of investing in people, creating meaningful careers, and fostering a workplace where individuals choose to stay and grow. We thank them wholeheartedly for their remarkable contributions.”

Cllr Dr Kate Usmar, cabinet member for adults’ support and independence at Gloucestershire County Council said: “We’re proud to celebrate 17 incredible colleagues who have dedicated between 25 and 41 years of service to the Gloucestershire Equipment Loan Service. That’s a combined total of 564 years, which is just amazing.

“But this isn’t just about counting years; it’s about recognising the positive impact of those years on the local community. They have worked tirelessly to make sure that people get the community equipment they need to live safely and independently at home. I’d like to extend my sincere thanks and congratulations to them all.”
