An appeal to drivers in Charlton Kings
Cllr Lisa Spivey, Leader of Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Drivers, we need your help. We realise the A40 London Road closure in Charlton Kings is frustrating and having a big impact in the local area. We’re working as quickly as possible to make essential structural repairs to save the bridge and make it safe again for all road users.
“I’m appealing to anybody driving in the area — please pay close attention to the road signs and allow extra time for your journeys.
“It’s critical for the safety of the community that drivers take care. There are streets in the area that are not suitable for large vehicles and a clear diversion route is in place. Yes, the diversion route is a little longer, and that’s because it must follow the same class of road so it can accommodate heavy vehicles. Unfortunately, heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) have been witnessed not following road signs and performing u-turns endangering cyclists, pedestrians and other road users.
“We know that most people are respectful and considerate drivers. We need to work together as a community to look out for each other while these essential safety works take place. We’re listening to feedback and working on several ways to make the situation better:
- We’re reviewing traffic signals in the area.
- We have increased civil enforcement patrols throughout Charlton Kings.
- We continue to liaise with the local community policing team in addressing reporting safety issues and concerns.
- We have improved signage in the area.
- We are liaising with local councillors and the local Parish Council.
“I would like to thank everyone again for their patience and understanding. It’s vital that we act now to save the bridge, so the road can be made safe for many years ahead”.
