Update: A40 London Road closure in Charlton Kings
Cllr. Joe Harris, cabinet member for Highways said: “I know that the ongoing closure of the A40 London Road is causing frustration for local people and we apologise for the inconvenience.
“We had hoped to reopen one lane in time for the November meeting at Cheltenham Racecourse, knowing this is one of the busiest weekends for local traffic. Unfortunately, the bridge is in a much worse condition than first anticipated and cannot safely support one-way traffic at this stage.
“This means the full road closure will need to remain in place during the November meeting. We completely understand and share the community’s frustration, if there were a safe way to reopen sooner, we absolutely would.
“I want to reassure residents that our engineers are working at pace to fix the bridge as soon as possible and we’re working with the police to try and ensure that the road restrictions are obeyed, particularly by lorry drivers.
“We’ll continue to keep everyone updated as progress is made and I’ve invited the local MP to visit the site so we can show first-hand the challenges and the work under way.”
