Positive response to road safety schemes but there’s still time to apply

Gloucestershire County Council has received an overwhelming response from local communities keen to take part in new road safety schemes, but there is still time to apply as the deadline is now extended to 26 September.

Parish, town and district councils across the county have applied to join two major programmes - Community 20s, which aims to introduce 20mph limits in built-up areas and Safer Roads, which aims tackles routes with a history of accidents.

Current interest:

  • Community 20s - 176 interested
  • Safer Roads – 174 interested

Cllr Lisa Spivey, Leader of Gloucestershire County Council, said: “We’re absolutely delighted by the response. It’s clear that communities across Gloucestershire are ready to embrace these initiatives and work together to make our roads safer. This is a real moment of optimism and collaboration and we’re so grateful to everyone who took the time to get involved.”

Cllr Roger Whyborn, cabinet member for Sustainable Transport and Strategic Highways, said: “This isn’t about imposing blanket changes, it’s about listening to what people want and delivering improvements that reflect local needs. What might work for one parish might not be appropriate in another. The energy and commitment we’ve seen from communities is exactly what we hoped for, and it sets a brilliant foundation for the next phase.”

About the programmes

  • Community 20s: introducing 20mph speed limits in places where people live, work and travel—particularly where children, pedestrians and cyclists are most at risk.
  • Safer Roads: reducing speeds on routes with a history of crashes, helping to prevent future incidents.

Both programmes are key to Gloucestershire’s Vision Zero ambition: eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2050, with a milestone goal of reducing deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2032.

Gloucestershire County Council extends thanks to every council and councillor who submitted an application and encourages those who haven't applied to do this by the deadline.
