Cabinet approves Gloucestershire Local Nature Recovery Strategy
Across the UK, nature faces unprecedented challenges with the country one of the most nature-depleted in the world. Government has made legally binding commitments to end these declines and for nature to recover. This requires targeted, co-ordinated and collaborative action. Gloucestershire - renowned for its beautiful landscapes and diverse wildlife - is determined to respond by agreeing priorities for nature recovery.
Through the use of an online interactive map, actions are proposed in the locations where they would make a particular contribution to achieving those priorities. This spatial element of the strategy is key in steering where we target nature recovery in the county.
The LNRS will help those in strategic planning roles, planning decision-makers, farmers and landowners, as well as local communities, to see where action is needed. The strategy identifies priority areas for nature recovery, promotes sustainable land management, and supports local action to improve rivers, woodlands, meadows and urban green spaces. Its aims include creating more wildlife-friendly places, connecting habitats, and encouraging community involvement in nature-based projects.
Over the past year, the county council consulted widely with residents, local groups, landowners, experts, and businesses. Hundreds of voices helped shape the strategy, ensuring it reflects the priorities and aspirations of Gloucestershire’s communities. Every suggestion has brought Gloucestershire closer to a shared vision for nature recovery.
With dedicated funding secured, the county council has appointed a delivery officer to champion the LNRS and coordinate its rollout. This investment will enable us to embed the strategy into the council’s work, creating strong delivery partnerships as well as support for local initiatives.
The next steps include launching the strategy online, sharing resources, and engaging with potential delivery partners. Also key to delivering local nature recovery is the integration of Gloucestershire’s LNRS into the planning system, so that areas of greatest potential for nature recovery can be better reflected in planning for growth and in planning decisions.
The LNRS promises real benefits for Gloucestershire: cleaner air and water, richer wildlife, and more opportunities for everyone to enjoy and care for the countryside. Improved green spaces boost mental and physical health, provide places for families to explore, and help tackle climate change. By working together, we can make Gloucestershire a leader in nature recovery and a better place for all.
Cllr Martin Horwood, Cabinet Member for Nature, Climate and Waste Reduction, said: “This strategy is a game-changer for Gloucestershire’s environment and communities. We’ve listened to local people, experts, and partners, and together we’re taking bold steps to protect and restore our natural heritage. I encourage everyone to visit our website in February, discover the strategy, and join us on this exciting journey.”
The Gloucestershire Local Nature Recovery Strategy will be published on the council website in February 2026.
