Travel through time and earn free rewards with The Library Challenge 2026
This year’s theme, Tales Through Time, invites young readers to explore Gloucestershire’s rich heritage through stories. From ancient myths to modern tales, children can travel through different periods in history while enjoying books of their choice.
The challenge, which is free to join, is open to children aged three and over and runs throughout the summer. Participants can take part by signing up for a free library membership.
Along the way, children will complete fun activities such as reading, getting creative with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths), and connecting with nature.
Once signed up, each child will receive a free challenge journal with nine themed tasks. They can collect stamps as they go, with rewards available at each stage, including stickers, certificates and more. Those who reach gold level will receive a special eco-medal, made in county library labs using recyclable materials, and will be entered into a prize draw for book bundles and vouchers.
A colourful adventure map will also help families plan their journey through six themed zones, from Courageous Quests to Epic Myths and Fables. There will also be a wide range of free events and activities taking place in libraries across the county throughout the summer.
Last year, more than 6,500 children took part in the challenge, with around 2,400 reaching gold level. This year, the aim is to welcome even more families and inspire a love of reading for pleasure.
The Library Challenge launches on Saturday 11 July and runs until Saturday 12 September.

Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, cabinet member for libraries, said: "The Library Challenge is a brilliant way to get children reading, learning and having fun over the summer. It opens the door to a world of stories while helping families discover just how much our libraries have to offer. I’d encourage everyone to sign up and get involved."
