Progress accelerates on A435 cycleway project

Published
The A435 Evesham Road will re-open to traffic in both directions on Saturday 1 November 2025 at 6am, marking a significant step forward in the project.

Construction works to complete improvements along the route will continue into early 2026. During this time, essential roadworks are taking place in October and November 2025 to carry out road resurfacing, install permanent traffic, pedestrian and cyclist signals and remove the temporary mini-roundabout at the A435 / Hyde Lane / Southam Lane junction.

To allow construction teams to carry out these improvements safely and efficiently, the following closures are planned:

A435 overnight closures – October 2025

  • Where: From Hyde Lane / Southam Lane Junction to Cheltenham Racecourse roundabout

  • When: Monday 27 October to Thursday 30 October, overnight from 8pm to 6am

Full weekend closure – A435 / Hyde Lane / Southam Lane Junction – November 2025

  • Where: Full closure of the junction

  • When: Friday 7 November at 8pm to Monday 10 November at 6am

Contingency overnight closures – November 2025

  • Where: A435 / Hyde Lane / Southam Lane junction

  • When: Monday 10 November to Thursday 13 November, overnight from 8pm to 6am

Note: These will only occur if the weekend works are delayed due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. Please see @glosroads social media accounts and the scheme webpage www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/highways/a435cycleway for updates on these closures.

Maintaining access and minimising disruption

A clearly signed diversion route will be in place during all closure periods. Importantly, access to local properties and businesses – including Webbs Garden Centre – will be maintained via the Cheltenham Racecourse roundabout. Emergency services access will be preserved at all times.

The main junction closures in November will begin only after the A435 reopens to two-way traffic on 31 October, ensuring a smooth transition and minimal disruption.

Councillor Roger Whyborn, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Transport and Strategic Highways said “I am pleased to announce the next major milestone in the delivery of the A435 Cheltenham to Bishop’s Cleeve cycleway scheme, which is set to bring safer, greener and more accessible travel options to the region. We appreciate the public’s patience and support as we work to deliver a safer and more sustainable transport network for Gloucestershire.”
