Memory Sparks Bags help people living with dementia to share memories
The free bags can be borrowed in the same way as library books using a Gloucestershire Libraries card and reserved for collection at any library in the county.
Each bag contains a carefully selected collection of books, photographs, sensory objects, activities and conversation prompts designed to inspire reminiscence and storytelling. The resources can be used at home, in care settings or by community groups, offering an enjoyable way for people to connect through shared memories and experiences.
The bags have been developed with support from dementia specialists and community organisations to ensure they are dementia-friendly, accessible and inclusive. They have been designed to support not only people living with dementia and memory loss, but also the families, friends and carers who support them.
The project has been supported by funding from NHS One Gloucestershire. Anyone interested in borrowing a bag or supporting the project through a donation can find out more here: Memory Sparks Bags | Gloucestershire Libraries
The initiative forms part of Gloucestershire Libraries' wider Ageing with Creativity programme, which promotes wellbeing, creativity and social connection for older adults across the county.
Early feedback from people using the bags has been positive, with many saying they help spark conversations, strengthen relationships and create enjoyable moments together.
Cllr Lisa Spivey, leader of Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Libraries play an important role in supporting the wellbeing of our communities, and these Memory Sparks Bags are a wonderful example of that.
“Living with dementia can be challenging, both for individuals and their loved ones, but simple activities such as sharing memories and telling stories can make a real difference. I'm delighted that Gloucestershire Libraries are providing this free resource to help people connect, reminisce and enjoy time together.”
