Accessing GHES - guidance for medical professionals ONLY
Referrals direct to GHES can only be made by an NHS consultant, community paediatrician or a registered clinician of a child in treatment with CAMHS. They must be able to confirm that due to the child's current medical condition they are too unwell to attend their main school, and they also must be able to confirm they will be overseeing their treatment for the duration they are with GHES for the primary reason for the referral.
If you are the appropriate medical professional use the link below:

Once a medical referral is submitted, this triggers a request to the child's main school for educational information. Only when this is received will GHES be able to consider the referral.
There may also be a request for additional SEND, Social Care or Advisory Teaching Service/Educational Psychologist input if relevant.
All evidence is carefully considered by the admissions panel before making a decision.

Post-Operative Education
A child may have pre-planned surgery or unplanned surgery (in an emergency or through a cancellation) at Gloucester Royal Hospital or any other hospital in the UK. Discharge from hospital to home and recovery time can vary greatly, as can the wellness of the child post-surgery to access education.
As soon as a school is made aware that one of their children is due to have a surgical procedure please contact us as far in advance as possible to consider what support may be required. Use the following form:

Partnership working
Personalised education packages are created for each individual based on their needs and this is reviewed regularly. With the child or young person at the heart of all we do, we rely on working in partnership with schools, families and medical professionals to further the best interests of all our students.
Medical professionals
Ongoing medical support is essential for children and young people to receive GHES education. Advice and information is requested routinely from medical professionals, to guide us on the type and amount of provision a student can manage, the progress they make and when a return to school is possible.
Schools
Students are dual registered with their main school whilst they are with GHES and the ambition is always for them to return to their main school or another setting when their health improves. It is important, therefore, for the main school to be involved at all stages, from gathering baseline data and pupil information, feeding back to schools pupils' progress, and jointly attending meetings. Maintaining links with a student’s main school facilitates a successful and smooth reintegration, when a young person is well enough.
