Roadworks Information and Planned Road Closures
Black Dog Way and London Road walking and cycling improvements

Construction is underway at the Black Dog Way junction, having started on 9 February. A Meet the Contractor event took place on Wednesday 4 February 2026 from 10am – 6pm at Gloucester Heritage Hub, Clarence Row, Alvin Street, Gloucester GL1 3DW.
In the first few weeks of construction, lane widths have been reduced on approaches to the junction. From the start of the project, turning right from London Road onto Black Dog Way is no longer available, and this change is now permanent. This measure is essential for maintaining junction capacity, improving traffic flow and protecting priority for buses and emergency vehicles.
Temporary Traffic Layout from Saturday 14 March and Phase 2 works
- Installation of a temporary mini‑roundabout
- Removal of the existing traffic signals
This arrangement will remain in place until later phases of the project, when the permanent junction layout and traffic signals are reinstated.
The temporary mini‑roundabout is a tried and tested way of managing traffic during construction. It has been used successfully on other busy routes, such as the B4063 and the A435, helping to keep vehicles moving while work takes place.

We will be keeping a close eye on how it operates once installed, and we kindly ask drivers to approach the junction with care as everyone gets used to the temporary layout.
🚦To help people cross safely, temporary signal‑controlled pedestrian crossings will also be in place on both Black Dog Way and Bruton Way. Please note that these signals are only for pedestrian crossings, they do not control the roundabout. Drivers should continue to follow normal roundabout rules and give way as usual.

Northgate and Southgate Street
We’re pleased to share that most of the improvements in Phase 1 are now complete, making the city centre more accessible and enjoyable for cyclists and pedestrians.
There are just a few finishing touches left:
- On Northgate Street, some imprinted tarmac areas remain unpainted. This is due to the need for warmer temperatures for the surface paint to be applied. We’ll monitor conditions and aim to complete this work in late spring, when temperatures are suitable.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout the works. We hope you’re already enjoying the improved facilities and look forward to delivering the final touches soon.

Please be aware that jumping the red lights at the temporary traffic light locations will trigger all other lights at the junction to default to red as a safety measure. To avoid additional delays and maintain safety we encourage all road users not to go through on the red light.
