Temporary Staff Service

The Temporary Staff Service (TSS) provides temporary and casual staff to the teams across Gloucestershire County Council to support short-term projects, assist with peak-time work or provide cover for employee absences (e.g. maternity leave).

The roles vary from data entry and general administration to project management, IT, or teaching. Most roles are based in Gloucester, but we also support our teams based in various locations around the county and many roles have the option of some homeworking.

Each role varies in length from a few days to several months, with most normally around 2 to 3 months, and can be full or part-time.

Our aim is to be able to quickly support the needs of Gloucestershire County Council by placing the right person into the right role.

What we offer

  • Competitive rates in pay in line with the normal pay rates of GCC employees, and always at the living wage or above.
  • Free car parking at many of our working locations.
  • Enrolment in the Local Government Pension Scheme (for temporary roles lasting 3 months or more).
  • Flexibility in working hours in many roles.

What we are looking for

  • People who are keen to learn and gain experience.
  • Full or part time (although we do not usually take candidates who are only able to work term time).
  • General IT skills, with a working knowledge of Microsoft products.
  • Previous experience of office roles is a benefit, but not always essential.

All candidates must be living in and able to work in the UK, and any candidates for ‘customer facing roles’ must be able to demonstrate an ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in fluent English.

Some roles will only be available to candidates who are able to complete Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks.

How does it work

The first step is to create your recruitment account and then apply for the Temporary Staff Roles job advert at https://careers.gloucestershire.gov.uk/ .

Complete the forms and upload a personal statement telling us about yourself and why you are applying.

Although it’s not mandatory, we’d encourage you to upload a CV which shows your recent employment history and any relevant qualifications.

Our team will assess your application and if we like what we see, we’ll invite you for a registration interview.

At the registration interview, we’ll ask you to tell us about yourself and what sort of work you are looking for. It gives you an opportunity to tell us a bit more about your skills and experience, and it gives us the chance to assess your suitability for temporary roles at GCC. You’ll undertake a short test as part of the interview.

When you are invited to the registration interview you’ll be asked to bring along contact details of referees for all the employment, volunteering and education covering the last two to three years. You’ll also be asked to bring various ID documents with you. If you are unable to provide references or the required hard-copy ID documents then we will be unable to proceed with your registration.

If you are successful at the registration appointment and subject to the completion of additional checks (references and occupation health), you’ll be added to our list of available temporary staff.

We will then send you job adverts which match the type of role and working location you are looking for. You can then apply to these alongside our other temporary staff.

In each job advert, you’ll see a general job description, the expected duration of the role and the pay. Your application is passed to the hiring manager who may wish to interview you for the specific role before making their decision.

You’ll be sent temporary job adverts for around six months, after which you’ll need to make contact with us again to ensure you remain on our available list of staff.
