Introduction

A bus lane is a traffic lane reserved for buses, and often other authorised vehicles such as pedal cycles, taxis and private hire vehicles (where indicated by local signs).

Bus Lanes are created by Traffic Regulation Orders using powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

The Gloucestershire County Council Bus Lane Order 2021 and Gloucestershire County Council Bus Lane (Variation) Order 2022 Sealed Plans, the 2021 associated map schedules  & the 2022 associated map Schedule sets out:

  • The location of all bus lanes in Gloucestershire;
  • The times of day the bus lane restriction applies; and
  • The vehicles permitted to use each bus lane

Gloucestershire County Council is an approved local authority under The Bus Lane Contraventions (Approved Local Authorities) (England) Order 2005 for the purposes of S.144 of the Transport Act 2000, and can therefore issue civil penalties for bus lane contraventions. Some bus lanes are enforced using cameras - the cameras and recording system used have been approved under The Bus Lanes (Approved Devices) (England) Order 2005 or The Civil Enforcement of Road Traffic Contraventions (Approved Devices, Charging Guidelines and General Provisions) (England) Regulations 2022, from 31st May 2022.
