Gloucestershire Schools Pollution Project
Is your school interested in hosting an air quality sensor*?
Gloucestershire County Council is keen to capture air quality impacts at schools, and gather more information on particulate matter levels across the county.
To be eligible to host a sensor, you must:
To be eligible to host a sensor, you must:
-
Have a suitable outdoor location to install the monitor that is between 1.5 to 3 metres above ground level. The sensor can be secured to a wall, fence or drainpipe using cable ties or screws provided.
-
Ensure the sensor will be continuously connected to mains power and WiFi, including overnight and during holidays. A 5 metre weatherproof power lead is provided. If you are struggling with access to a mains power supply, let us know.
-
Be a non-fee paying school.
The sensors typically cost under £3 a year to run and will need to be installed for a minimum of 1 year.
If you would like to host a sensor, please email glosair@gloucestershire.gov.uk. If you have been successful, we will provide you with information on next steps, our terms and conditions and privacy notice.
*We are providing PurpleAir sensors, which are low-cost sensors and may not be as accurate as high quality, professional-grade equipment used by the government and local authorities for air quality monitoring. However, they will provide useful indicative data, help identify trends in pollution and allow us and you to monitor the air quality at your school and suggest and support on action.

What will we do with the air quality data?
Data will be analysed to identify any trends in air pollution and inform air quality projects in the locality.
We'll also look to provide you with updates to your area and provide tailored presentations on your air quality. We'll be looking at things like;
- Are there pollution spikes during school pick up and drop off?

- How is the air quality during school holidays compared to term time?

- Does the temperature influence the air quality?

- Are there any pollution spikes in the evening in winter?

Alongside this, we'll be working with our Trees for Gloucestershire team to deliver free trees
to schools in the county and ThinkTravel to chat all things sustainable travel, including BikeAbility
training.

Thank you to air quality colleagues at Wiltshire Council for all your help!
