What do apprenticeships involve?
What do apprenticeships involve? 🎓💼
An apprenticeship lets you earn while you learn by gaining hands-on job experience and working towards a recognised qualification. At Gloucestershire County Council (GCC), apprenticeships include:
- On-the-job training in your role
- Off-the-job structured learning with a training provider
- Mentoring from experienced colleagues
Apprenticeships last from 12 months to 3 years, depending on level and subject.
Qualifications and levels of apprenticeships 🏆
GCC offers Level 2 to Level 6 apprenticeships, lasting one to five years:
- Level 2 (Intermediate): Equivalent to GCSEs; may require English/maths study if not already achieved.
- Level 3 (Advanced): Equivalent to 2 A Levels; usually requires relevant GCSEs and sometimes functional skills study.
- Levels 4–6 (Higher): Equivalent to a higher education certificate up to a bachelor’s degree; English and maths may be needed before or during the programme.
Assessment and support 🤗
A training provider and skills coach support your progress. You'll have a mentor and a buddy, and most learning happens at work through shadowing and practical experience. Many apprenticeships use a mix of workshops, remote learning, and individual instruction🧑🏫💻
