Caleb - Finance Manager

One word to describe Gloucester County Council would be REWARDING

It’s a great opportunity to work in a large-scale organisation

The work is challenging, and allows you to put learned skills into practice, and develop new ones! You’re given the freedom to use your initiative, offer new ideas, and problem solve. The team is excellent, very welcoming, and cohesive. All members of the team support one another to ensure no one person is overwhelmed.

Excellent support and training opportunities

I started in Strategic Finance as a Graduate Finance Trainee, working alongside completing my CIPFA qualification. I started mainly in Management Accounting, supporting Budget Holders in forecasting and budget setting. As my career developed, I became more involved in Corporate Finance, including Treasury Management and setting the Medium-Term Financial Strategy.

After 3 years, I completed my final CIPFA qualification and applied for the role of Accountant, for which I was successful! This allowed me to focus mainly on the MTFS, Benchmarking, and other Corporate Finance roles. I was also given the opportunity to travel to London to attend a CIPFA hosted event around Treasury Management and financing strategies.

I continued to develop, applying for an internal management course, and picking up the line management responsibility of two of the finance team. With these new skills, I had recently applied for my current role as Finance Manager.

Flexible working supports work / life balance

Agile working is supported at GCC, with Strategic Finance opting for a 1-day per week in the office minimum, and the rest is decided by you. The leave benefits are excellent for a corporate environment, and flexible core hours allow you to work around your personal preferences.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining us?
